It’s really tough to be a Storm fan right now. Everybody out there looks deflated and Nneka is having to carry this team on her back. The coach in pressers seems defeated, how does a team rise up when the coach has already lost? It has been a minute since I’ve seen consistent dynamic offensive (Storm) play. Add to it- The refs are garbage. You’ve got Steph White now twice pointing out how her team gets treated by the refs instead of using her platform to expose the wide discrepancies in the refereeing. (Also, her saying AB is the most beat up post player was laughable in that she gets away with her share of bully ball too…)
As you pointed out Jeff, we’re the least to go to the line…I feel like our coach and bench are the least barking.
Sky looks completely checked out. I don’t know if it’s strictly personal or injury as well, but she is in a funk.
The body language of the entire team is awful right now. It looks like a lost season at this point. There is a chance they still make the playoffs, but it'll likely be one and done if they even make it.
Speaking of offense what we really need is a shooter. Its unfortunate but the jewel loud we have seen in the month of august is exactly what the storm need. Also, besides her poor shooting numbers this year, when she was with the sun in 2024, on a contending team, marina mabrey was great. I am left thinking that she might fit better than sykes.
I don’t think anyone would fix what’s broken. This feels beyond a player. I think if they had gotten Sykes pre-skid, when we were “consistently inconsistent”…there may have been some hope…I do realize need wise, Mabrey is a better choice, but I think Sykes was likely brought in due to history with Nneka…and I think it could have worked before that skid got so deep.
Now it's looking like we have to beat Atlanta on Friday in Vancouver, B.C. to start to salvage our season and our slim playoff hopes. Speaking of Slim, if Sykes could have had a game similar to her last game we would have won. We really needed more from everyone not named Nneka to win this game. Dom definitely should have played more as she's really coming into her own now.
Dom has struggled against Atlanta. It's a bad matchup for her this season. Malonga was a -25 in the 13 minutes of action. Nneka Ogwumike was a +8 in 36 minutes. Meaning the 4 minutes she wasn't on the court, the team was -18.
Seattle's only chance to beat Atlanta on Friday is if the Dream struggle with their outside shot. But their whole offensive system is based on taking a lot of three-pointers, practicing three-point shooting, and having the green light for every player to take three-pointers, which gives them confidence.
The Storm can still make the playoffs, but I don't expect them to beat the Dream on Friday.
I've had Storm tickets for over 20 years. We've never lost six games in a row as far as I can remember. We've got some great players but our shooting, among other things, is definitely off. Nneka can't do it alone. Quite sure I won't get tickets next year if we don't have a coaching change.
